Celtic Knotwork

Celtic: Knot What You Think

We Celts love a good joke. The word play here is intended to delight your wits just as the intertwined dogs are intended to delight your eyes. The title ‘Celtic’, looking like it might have been the handiwork of some Bronze age artisan, proudly proclaims a heritage of rich achievements, but one that doesn’t take itself too seriously a’tall a’tall. Personally, I’m thrilled that as a contemporary Celtic artist, each morning I arise to do what other men only dream of – knot work all day long.

On a soft haze yellow shirt in tones of brown and white; small back print included. Sizes Sm – 2XL. Price $19.00

Celtic Triparte

Sure, it’s a simple knot; just three lobes comprise the plaiting. A single circle intertwined with a single line that constitutes the knot. A three-fold motif called a triparte. But it says Celtic in a language that all the world understands. Some say that the three lobed knot is the most beautiful of all Celtic plaiting – because of its simplicity and odd trilateral symmetry. Whether you agree or prefer more intricate constructions, there’s no denying that the simple clean lines of this design are an eye-catcher and unmistakably Celtic.

On a soft sea green in black and white. Large chest image on unisex shirts Sm-2XL; smaller center chest on juniors sizes with cap sleeve Sm-XL. Unisex shirts are $19.00. Cap sleeve Juniors are $22.00

Seacht Shamrocks and Hearts

Seacht

It's pronounced sheackt. It's seven in Gaelic - but a mystical number in virtually all cultures - full of promise. The knot comprises a seven-pointed star intersected by hearts and love knots, ringed by undulating loops and swirls and held together in the center by an eternal circle. But as with so many things involving the heart, on closer examination, one is left to wonder - does the star point outward, as stars do, or is it pointing inward to the core?

In brown and black on natural unisex. Single color back print. Unisex sizes Sm – 2XL. Price $19.00.

Shamrocks and Hearts

Ever since the story spread about St. Patrick using the three-leafed shamrock to teach the Celts about the Trinity, it has become a symbol of the Emerald Isle – a place dear to our hearts. In this stylized knot I’ve taken the shamrock and intertwined a heart into each of it’s leaves. It’s a simple, clean design, intended to lighten the spirit when it is observed. We’ve put it on shirts for all of you – from children to adults in colors that will please booth men and women alike. We’ve even put it on a long sleeve for when chilly weather comes in the hope it will warm your body as thoughts of the old country warm your heart.

Multicolor on Irish green all cotton shirt. Unisex sizes Sm – 2XL. Price $19.00.

Shankill Staff of Life

Shankill

It’s Irish Gaelic for old church. Here we’ve got three intersecting torqs at the center creating a stylized triangle in the center (trinity symbol). Concentric disks , some plain, some highly decorated, some only a backdrop for other design motifs could well represent various stages in the spiritual journey. The chain knot - the largest element in the design, after the 3-torq trinity, has a total of 12 individual knots on 2 intertwined cords - six each.  In our spiritual past we may reflect on the 12 tribes of Israel, 12 gates to the city, 12 books of the minor prophets, and the Apostles when we consider the number 12.  Shankill is also a notorious name from Ulster, where, along with the Falls Road, these two iconic areas represent ‘The Troubles’ at their worst. By the grace of God, we will one day reclaim the Shankill (and Falls) road in the name of freedom and peace and have once again, some would say for the first time, a free and united Ireland.

Stone finish in black and grays on black and ash raglans sleeve baseball shirt. Unisex sizes Sm – 2XL. $22.00.

Staff of Life

We don't live on the earth, we live with her, and she with us. This truth was a part of the daily lives of ancient Celts, and still is among those of us whose souls resonate with the continuing energy of creation pulsing all around us.
In this design, inspired by an ancient cross pattern found at Durrow, a wheat motif intersects at the center with an unbroken line plaited into four opposing knots, each straining toward one of the cardinal points. The border is a key pattern that is sometimes obvious and sometimes hidden - much like the patterns that define and embellish our lives.

Black art on cardinal red short sleeve and long sleeve shirts. Both have small back print between shoulders. Long sleeve has knotwork running down one arm. Unisex sizes Sm – 2XL.
Short sleeve - $19.00. Long sleeve $23.00

Tribal Triparte

This recent upsurge in “tribal” designs gives us reason for a quiet chuckle. Such designs were common among ancient warriors of many races – including the Celts. Tattoos were common as well. In ancient times, as now, these angular and angry designs were employed to add to the fierce appearance of men and women alike. Warriors took great pains to appear fierce in battle to their enemies employing devices that, to a calm and settled mind, might well appear a bit twisted. And so that’s what we’ve done here. We’ve taken the traditional triparte and twisted it a bit and added some flames – though what those flames represent – rebellion, fury, destruction or just a good fire on which to roast a knuckle of beef – is left to your imagination and desires.

Green. White and orange on the front of black tee or tank. Unisex sizes Sm – 2XL. Either shirt priced at $19.00.

Anam Cara

Anam Cara is Irish Gaelic for soul friend. Particularly among the aes dana, it was required that a person in spiritual or professional formation have a relationship with another in which each held the other accountable. It was a friendship beyond friendship, a relationship that went far beyond all others, requiring honesty, candor, trust and personal sacrifice. This was especially important for those in training to become druids, for when their training was completed, they would become responsible for the spiritual formation of others. It was personally risky to trust so completely, but so is any activity that allows one to take flight.

On natural in browns, black and white. Traditional unisex tee, 100% preshrunk cotton. Sm-2XL $19.00

Endless - An Unbroken Line

Endless: An Unbroken Line

Gan Bhriseadh Line - Irish Gaelic for Unbroken Line (g•an’ bvree’sha lee’na). This open weave figure was found on a grave marker. It’s geometric construction is quite advanced. There are 38 angles pointing outward and 38 pointing inward. Each gently curved line is advanced 9.4736 degrees to form the repeat around the circle and return to the originating point. An amazing feat given the drafting instruments of centuries ago. But more than the technical prowess of the artist, it speaks of a vision that goes beyond what is immediately predictable. It speaks of a sensitivity to the paradoxes that surround us - sometimes only partially seen, sometimes hidden in plain sight. It speaks to the endless process of discovery that informs us, on a good day, of those very important things we really already knew but often fail to realize. Who hasn’t been struck with a shivering sense of, “I knew that - why didn’t I know that I knew that?”

On a SUPER SOFT ringspun cotton in deep chocolate brown with multicolor image. Back has ghosted single color image.

Sm-2XL $22.00
