Etain’s Wings
Etain. The Maid of Joy and Sorrow. Beautiful beyond words - a queen of the fairies, but not without enemies. Tricked and trapped on the earthly side of the veil, she was seen by Irish king Eochaidh. He took her to wife and loved her well – until her sidh (shee) husband, king Midhir, came from the fairie realm to rescue her and return to the Otherworld. As was the way at those times, the two men, clearly rivals, agreed to play a game much like the game we call chess today. The winner would keep her as wife, the loser would have the consolation prize of a final farewell embrace. Midhir, brighter and more cunning than the mortal, could have beaten him easily, but was surrounded by Eochaid’s men at arms. So Midhir threw the game and humbly and sadly requested his farewell kiss. Surrounded by the warriors, Etain and Midhir reached for one another to embrace. At the instant that they touched, each sprouted full, beautiful sparkling wings and together they rose in flight and left the angry and befuddled mortal king to regret the day he first set eyes on the fairie folk.

Queen Maeve’s Brooch
Hair fiery red and falling like thunder behind her. Beauty to die for - or from… Queen Maeve of Connaught, arch rival of Ulster.
It was said that to merely see her stripped enemy warriors of one third their power and courage. All, that is, but the mighty Cuchullain, the Hound of Ulster, who repeatedly repulsed Maeve's assaults and attempts to steal the prized Ulster bull and his affection.
This brooch knot suggests not just simple lines of beauty, but the intricacy and cunning of Maeve's womanly wiles. Smooth lines, pleasing curves and then unexpectedly, at the core, a barbed ring sharp enough to draw blood... but then, that's what it's there for, isn't it?
Cap sleeve raglan. Available in white and coral or white and blue. Image is printed in black and a color to match sleeve fabric. Juniors only, sizes Sm – XL. Price $22.00. |
Irish Cutie with a Shamrock
Sweet as a peach and harder to reach, unless she wants you to. She is the quintessential Irish lass. A real spirfire like Maureen O’Hara in The Quiet Man. Remember the scene in which Sean Thornton (John Wayne) finds her in his newly purchased thatched hut. There’s a storm outside and he flushes her from her hiding place. She breaks for the door but he catches her arm and plants a good one – right on her lips. She pulls back and gives him a great wallop for his trouble and says:.
Mary Kate: “It's a bold one you are. And who gave you leave to be kissin' me?”
Sean: “So you can talk!”
Mary Kate: “Yes I can. I will, and I do. And it's more than talk you'll be gettin' if you step a step closer to me.”
Sean: “Don't worry. You've got a wallop!”
Mary Kate: “You'll get over it, I'm thinkin'.”
Sean: “Well, some things a man doesn't get over so easy.”
– And that’s the sum and substance of it. When it comes to the lasses, there’s just some things a man doesn’t get over easily a’tall a’tall. |
Hot Scot
Everybody knows one. Flashing eyes, a winning smile and a personality you’d think comes from a honeycomb - she’s lovely and she’s a force of Nature. The swash under the text contains the Scottish thistle, but if you’re thinking of trying to ‘contain’ a hot Scot you’d be better off filling your pockets with thistles. Proceed with care, this one can’t be tamed. But you can let her know you know; and that you appreciate her. Give her this shirt as a gift – no strings – because she knows what a gift with strings is. It is bait. You can even sign the card, if you dare. |
