James Joyce – Writer, Irishman
Ireland - Land of heroes and dreamers, artists and writers, musicians... those who upon beauty and intensity shall ever feast. James Joyce, perhaps the best known 20th century Irish writer and a self imposed exile from his native land, offered these words:
“This race and this country and this life
produced me, he said. I shall express
myself as I am."
-- James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
Verba volant, scripta manet… (spoken words fly away, written words remain). Joyce’s words, in his elegant Irish voice, are likely to remain for a good long time.

W. B. Yeates – Writer, Irishman
Ireland is a land of heroes and dreamers, artists and writers, musicians... those who upon beauty and intensity shall ever feast. And few writers have ever captured the intensity of Yeates in his poem, Easter 1916.
“We know their dream; enough
To know they dreamed and are dead.
And what if excess of love
Bewildered them till they died?
I write it out in a verse --
MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and Pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born."
Verba Volant – Scripta Manet?
(What is spoken flies away, what is written remains)

Greenman – It’s Not Easy Being Green
The Green Man, the Straw Man, Iron John, The Green Knight, are all myths dealing with cycles and passages of life. In this rendition of the Green Man we've tried to capture some of the conflicting aspects of his character. The scruffy commonplace appearance and the hint of mystery that hides behind his startling blue eyes. His ability to bless and provide and the harsh reality of his anger and rage. As with many myths, this is an attempt to use an archetype to explain away the dichotomies that lurk within the human soul. Of the dichotomies that lurk within you, which face are you showing today? Which are you hiding, and from whom?
On a wild acid washed, thin and SUPER SOFT ringspun cotton tee in mottled blacks and greens, printed on greens and cerulean blue for the eyes. SM-XL $22.00
On earthy green in greens, cream and black on 100% preshrunk cotton unisex tee. Sm-2XL $19.00.

He Was Irish
It’s not a new idea - that from time to time the Irish can be a bit dramatic sometimes experiencing conflicting highs and lows. The ages old saying, “the great Gaels of Ireland, the men the gods made mad – for all their wars are merry and all their songs are sad, sums it up, even if overstated - not ALL our songs are sad. But Yeates words have the ring of truth to them, especially as applied to his fellow writer, James Joyce. In this design I’ve taken a sort of Victorian/Gothic approach to the shamrock, a la Edward Gorey and contrasted it with a lovely, flowing hand crafted script with intertwined glyphs reminiscent of the old knotwork. When I had finished, I was thrilled, but then upon further reflection, I’d have to admit that I have mixed feelings... but then, isn’t that the point?
On super-soft ring spun cotton in black, white and green on charcoal. Back has cascading shamrocks falling from the left shoulder – or did they jump? |
